I first visited the house in 2005, and have lived here for the past 6 years. I have worked FOR and WITH the Foundation, and have grown immensely. I have attended most events, exhibits, parties, etc so I know the breath and depth of its mission. For the past 4 years post Covid, I have interacted with the ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCY attendees. This house is such a source of inspiration to them, as well as Durk’s guidance while attending. They don’t apply just to be in LA, or have a place to stay, or vacation. The SPIRIT of TOM OF FINLAND permeates the grounds/house and it is THAT SPIRIT that drives them to be innovative, imaginative, and extending their creative force to the world…just as TOM did. TOM had Durk to provide the environment to succeed in having his dreams fulfilled, and that seems to be the same spirit the present-day artists enjoy and pursue.
The idea of moving TOM OF FINLAND to any place other site than TOMS HOUSE…would have the same effect had the WORLD TRADE CENTER MEMORIAL site to be moved to Poughkeepsie NY…? You cannot make NEW history nor memories just by WISHING it so. TOM OF FINLAND and Durk Dehner began the vision here at the TOM HOUSE. Ask yourself this…Do you even think TOM OF FINLAND would be happy with TOM VISION taken and put in control of non-visionary 9-5 neophytes, who a) never could have the vision to further TOMS vision , or b) have the expertise to preserve the work TOM and Durk began 40+ years ago. TOMS VISION: to preserve Tom’s art, and to serve as a safe haven and promote queer and erotic art while educating the public about its cultural merits. Don’t turn TOMS HOUSE to a queer JERSEY SHORE ripoff. That’s what I feel the ToFF board is doing to TOM OF FINLANDs legacy!
