Dear friends,The crisis at the Tom of Finland Foundation raises also another pressing question: what will become of the collection - comprising approximately 10,000 artworks by queer artists from around the globe - excluding the works by Tom of Finland himself, which the board has moved to an undisclosed storage location? It is said to be the largest collection of erotic art in the world.I suppose that all of us artists-in-residence contributed some pieces to the collection after our stay here atTom House.
Over the decades, many queer artists have entrusted their work to the Foundation, believing that it would be safely preserved there and made accessible to the public. What will happen to this vast and historically important collection?
This is also a deeply personal matter for me: a number of my significant pieces are held in this collection, including a large portrait of Tom - painted shortly after his death in 1992; a six-part mural on the façade of the Tom House in Los Angeles which I created at Durk's request, and several other works. From Berlin with love, Rinaldowww.rinaldohopf.com
